Shui Ming – Water

When ice melts into water, there’s a moment when it assumes exactly the basic symbol for water in Chinese writing – looking through a microscope, of course.

A mere coincidence?

As we’re talking about a molecular process visible only through a microscope, one wonders which ancient knowledge such correlation might rely on or which were the tools available to the Chinese at that time. Another interesting question would also be why the symbol for water would be taken from the moment when ice becomes fluid. What was the story behind?

This intrigues me, but maybe someone who passes by my blog has an explanation for it.
